Regular alcoholic consumption
raises blood pressure, particularly in
individuals who are already hypertensive.
This effect soon wears off after the
excessive drinking is curtailed. Binge
drinking is quite often associated with an
increased risk of developing a stroke.
The usual recommended maximum consumption of
alcohol per week is:
• 21 units for women
• 28 units of alcohol for men
Hypertensive people should limit their
drinking to:
• 14 units per week for women.
• 21 units per week for men.

guidelines)
A unit of alcohol is widely accepted to be
as follows:
• 250ml (1/2 pint) of ordinary strength
beer/lager
• 1 glass (125ml)/4 fl oz) of wine
• 1 pub measure of sherry/vermouth (1.5 fl
oz)
• 1 pub measure of spirits (1.5 fl oz).
