less than half will be satisfactorily controlled on just one type of medicine, and a third will require a combination of up to three or more drugs. Effective drugs and
medication for hypertension arrived with us
in the 1950’s and 1960’s and although they
appeared to initially have an immediate
beneficial impact, they also had side
effects which made them unsuitable for
widespread use or for other than severe
hypertension. Most of the drugs from that
era are no longer used routinely. Modern
therapy, on the other hand is well tolerated
and safe. With care it can be used in a very
wide range of people of all ages.
